Why do animals go extinct?

By now, we've heard about the fate of the dinosaurs, the wooly mammoth and perhaps even the dodo bird. Even today, species are still going extinct – experts at the World Wildlife Fund estimate that between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur annually – assuming that there are 2 million different species on our planet and that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species become extinct each year.


So what causes extinction?
